Housing is a human right and there simply is not enough supply to meet the need. That’s why housing costs are through the roof. Effie believes Congress needs to place the same emphasis on housing as President Biden did on infrastructure. She also believes rents should be capped for tenants who receive federal benefits like Section 8.

Provide Cash Assistance for First-Time Home Buyers, Up to $50,000

In the Hudson Valley, children who grow up here often cannot afford to buy homes here when they are adults. Countless families have lost opportunities to build generational wealth because costs are prohibitively high. Effie’s cash assistance program will help families achieve homeownership.

Guarantee Childcare from Birth to Kindergarten

Childcare is one of the most expensive and stressful burdens that parents bear. Effie’s proposal embodies the principle of “it takes a village to raise a family” by guaranteeing one-year of family leave for new parents, six months paid and six months job-protected. Families that qualify will receive a subsidy to help them through the last six months. And then, assuming the parents return to work, Effie will fight for universal school-based childcare for one-year olds and universal pre-k for 2- to 4-year-olds, all the way through kindergarten.

Medicare as a Public Option

Approximately 921,000 New Yorkers lacked health insurance in 2023. Most if not all likely needed a doctor at some point in the last two years. If we truly believe healthcare is a human right, those New Yorkers must have access to an insurance plan that can covers their needs.

Defending Reproductive Freedom

Effie has fought for reproductive rights her whole life. She will continue the fight by working to advance federal legislation that ensures safe access to abortion and protects women’s health.

Advancing Peace and Safety

Effie knows that the US is safer and more prosperous when we support our international allies. Effie backs Ukraine, and she believes in a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine. In Congress Effie will advocate for a permanent cease-fire to the war in Gaza.

Effie believes that politicians should be chosen by the people, not powerbrokers or the few who donate the most. Her grassroots campaign will not accept corporate PAC money, and she will fight to overturn Citizens United.
